Exploring Statistics Pertaining to Covid-19

Summary

Covid-19 has placed a great burden on many people across the world. I wanted to explore the extent at which this disease has impacted the lives of others, including myself. Therefore, I conducted an exploratory analysis to uncover some data on Covid-19 and in doing so, I discovered some staggering statistics about it. I utilized one, open sourced dataset that is routinely updated with Covid-19 data such as “total amount of deaths”, “total cases, “new cases”, “new vaccinations” etc. The data was analyzed through MYSQL. Once analyzed, some of the queries that I felt were most important were then visualized using Tableau to help visually reveal what was found.

Intro

I wanted to look at some statistics pertaining to Covid-19. This disease has played a pivotal role in the lives of many, therefore, I wanted to do a dive into the data to hopefully uncover how much of an impact this disease has caused on the world.

Background Information

Covid-19 has come with a plethora of unfortunate events. lives of many were impacted, whether that altered or lost. The disease has impacted not only the United States, but the entire world. Norms were changed for many people across the world and very few are able to make sense of it. Scientist were able to establish a vaccine against Covid-19, however, even that is not enough to prevent the havoc that this disease brings upon each individual.

Objective

Conduct some exploratory analysis on the Covid-19 statistics up until December 2021 in order to understand the level of impact the disease has globally.

The goals I aimed to achieve through this analysis were to:

  1. Discover how many lives were taken from Covid-19 globally.

  2. Where in the world has Covid-19 impacted the most.

Preparation of The Data

The data pulled from pulled from “Our World in Data”. it is an open source website that allows from the use of their data. Their Covid statistics are updated daily and contains stats globally.

Some limitations to the data that I have found:

  1. Some of the data within the dataset were missing some values which could potentially skew the data that was able to be pulled from it.

Data Processing & Cleaning

The Dataset did not need any cleaning. Although, there were some null values within the data. Ultimately, I decided to keep the null values due to the fact that many of the other columns within the various rows contained data.

 Analysis

I have chosen to use MYSQL to uncover various questions that pertained to the dataset. This analysis aimed to help the masses easily digest the current statistics on Covid-19.

The SQL codes used to unpack the dataset could be found here:

Findings

After conducting my analysis, some of the discoveries I have found were:

  1. Covid-19 has taken roughly 2% of the population around the world. The percentage may seem small but putting it into context the world consists of about 7.7 billion people. 2% of that is “140 million”. That is a significant amount of lives lost, especially within a short amount of time.

  2. Of the 4 biggest countries, North America has been the most impacted from Covid-19. Not sure the reasoning behind this, but it could be due to the nation containing more people, less people in North America are willing to take precautions, or possibly that North American holds more people who have underlying illnesses.
